This book held a special place in my heart during my early childhood. It later became one of my favorite read-aloud books that I enjoyed sharing with my children. What I loved about it was the book's engaging pace, making it perfect for read-aloud. When I read it to my children, I would even use my best "Grover" voice to add humor and bring the story to life. The best part of this well written and wonderfully illustrated children's classic, was seeing Grover's increasing anxiety with each page turn as we approached the "monster" at the end of the book. (SPOILER ALERT!) Only to discover that HE, Lovable, Furry Old Grover was the monster at the end of the book.
As a child, I had my own fear of monsters! It wasn't the visible ones that scared me; it was the imagined ones lurking in the darkness. Whether it was my closet, under the bed, down the hallway, or elsewhere, I believed these shadowy figures were waiting to pounce, at any time. My imagination turned everyday objects in the dark into terrifying monsters, that I was certain were out to "get" me. Even simple tasks like taking out the trash in the dark to the detached garage became a scary experience, as I never knew what might be hiding there, ready to jump out and frighten me.
As an author/illustrator, I was searching for inspiration for my fifth book, and I thought about how much I enjoyed "The Monster at the end of this Book" and realized that it didn't fully address the fear that my own imagination conjured in the dark. That's when I decided to write a book that would help readers confront their fears and understand that it might be their own imagination creating these scary monsters.
In "Monsters are EVERYWHERE! But, They Only Come Out at Night!", (https://amzn.to/3WBKEDM) James comes face-to-face with his fears, as he shares his repeated night-time encounters with "scary monsters". James sheds some light on his fears, which leads him to his eventual revelation of what may be behind these nocturnal appearances. This story is designed to help children with their fears, and empower them to not be afraid of things that may look scary in the dark.
This is a perfect story to read to a child, who is afraid of the dark, especially before bed time. This book will give them some reassurance and relief, and may help both of you get a good night's sleep.
